Everyone who has travelled across the amazing labyrinth of the vastest Bulgarian mountain has touched the flower heart of the Rhodopes. The endless sea of green woods, colorful meadows and unique natural formations can’t escape the sight of the traveler. Located on 14 571 sq.km. (out of total 18 000 sq.km.) this mountain expanse is the richest in superior plant species in Bulgaria and ranks among the richest in Europe.
Near 2400 species are to be found here, comprising 65% of the flora in Bulgaria. The experts -botanists organize all this species wealth in three floristic sub-regions – West, Central and East Rhodopes, each of them featuring its own peculiarities and specifics. The Rhodopes are the richest of endemic plants (species found only in a limited area) floristic region of the country, with about 200 species of Bulgarian and Balkan endemic species, many of which are protected by law.
Diverse habitats this mountain offers are home to many mushrooms and precious medicinal plants and are a paradise for fans of mushrooms and herbs gathering. Not by chance it is here, in the month of herbs and fairies and of the coming summer with explosion of colors in the woods and meadows, where for the first time in Bulgaria the Wildflower Festival is held.
